Fefanyi: a musical adventure with Abdoulaye Kouyaté (Macphail Centre)

Sat 5 Jul 2025 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM BST The Macphail Centre, Ullapool, IV26 2UN

Guinean-born guitarist, kora player, composer, and singer Abdoulaye Kouyaté proudly presents his new album, Fefanyi—a rich fusion of Mandingue traditions and modern influences.

Sung in soussou (the language of Guinea’s capital, Conakry) and French, many tracks draw inspiration from Abdoulaye’s youthful years in 1990s and 2000s Conakry. Rooted in his griot heritage, Fefanyi (meaning "the good deed" in soussou) continues the Kouyaté family tradition of honouring great figures through song. Abdoulaye blends jazz, blues, pop, and Afro-fusion, crafting a sound that respects his lineage while embracing innovation.

As the son of Sekou Kouyaté—a revered modern griot, guitarist, and former bandleader for Miriam Makeba during her exile in Guinea—Abdoulaye channels his creative energy into this deeply personal project.
